Empowering the Leaders of Tomorrow: A Recap of the Second Edition of the Workshop on Leadership for Secondary School Prefects (WOLFSSP)

On the 5th of July, 2024, the Usman Oyetunji Ogungboye Foundation hosted the second edition of its Workshop on Leadership for Secondary School Prefects (WOLFSSP) at Oyeleke Hall, Offa Grammar School, Offa. This initiative, aimed at nurturing the next generation of leaders, brought together enthusiastic prefects from various secondary schools to engage in a day filled with learning, reflection, and growth.

The day began with the arrival of the Program Officer, Miss Rebecca, and Volunteer, Miss Eunice, who promptly commenced the registration of participants at 9:50 AM. The atmosphere was charged with anticipation as the young leaders-to-be gathered for what promised to be an enriching experience.

The workshop kicked off with an opening prayer, followed by an introductory session led by Miss Rebecca. She took the time to introduce the organization, the attending teachers, and the participants, creating an inclusive and welcoming environment. A key highlight of this session was her detailed explanation of who Usman Oyetunji Ogungboye was and the mission and vision of the foundation. Miss Rebecca also highlighted the foundation’s achievements, emphasizing the positive impact of its various programs on students’ lives.

Transitioning into the core of the workshop, Miss Rebecca, who identified herself as a former school prefect, began by defining leadership and discussing its significance. She engaged the students in a conversation about the qualities of a good leader, the roles and responsibilities of school prefects, and essential leadership skills. Her approach was not just theoretical; she used practical examples and invited questions, ensuring that the students could relate the lessons to their own experiences.

One of the most impactful parts of the workshop was the practical session, where students participated in role-playing scenarios. In one activity, two prefects simulated a conflict while another attempted to mediate the dispute. This exercise demonstrated effective conflict resolution strategies, helping the students build confidence in handling real-life leadership challenges.

Group discussions followed, providing a platform for the prefects to share their experiences and insights since assuming office. This peer-to-peer exchange allowed them to learn from one another and develop a collective understanding of leadership.

The workshop also encouraged the prefects to plan and execute projects that would benefit their school communities, putting their leadership skills into action in a meaningful way.

As the day drew to a close, Miss Rebecca emphasized the importance of self-reflection in leadership. She encouraged the prefects to regularly evaluate their personal leadership styles, identify areas for improvement, and set goals for their development. Continuous learning, through reading, research, attending leadership workshops, and engaging in community service, was highlighted as a key strategy for developing leadership skills.

The event concluded with a heartfelt vote of thanks from Miss Rebecca on behalf of the Usman Oyetunji Ogungboye Foundation, followed by refreshments for all participants. The day ended on a high note with group photos, interviews, and a renewed sense of purpose among the young leaders.

The WOLFSSP continues to be a beacon of hope and inspiration for secondary school prefects, equipping them with the skills and knowledge needed to lead with confidence and integrity. The Usman Oyetunji Ogungboye Foundation remains committed to nurturing the leaders of tomorrow, ensuring they are well-prepared to make a positive impact in their schools and beyond.
